Predictive and adaptive delivery

Predictive and adaptive delivery are not simply slow versus fast. They make different assumptions about how predictable the work is, when feedback becomes available, how costly change is, and how value can be released.

01 · CORE LESSON

Build the mental model.

Understand how delivery models organize uncertainty, feedback, planning, and control.

Scope and requirements are established and baselined earlier, and work often progresses through planned phases and approvals. This can fit stable work, expensive change, or formal control and regulatory evidence.

  • Clear phase gates and upfront planning.
  • Verification and releases may be staged or concentrated later.
  • Changes require explicit impact and approval.
VISUAL MODEL

Delivery approach comparison

Many organizations use hybrid controls; the key is to make the operating model explicit.

01Plan-driven

Predictive

  • Greater up-front definition
  • Planned phases
  • Formal baselines and change control
  • Staged or single releases
  • Fits stable or high-control work
02Feedback-driven

Adaptive

  • Iterative discovery and delivery
  • Requirements evolve
  • Frequent feedback
  • Usable increments
  • Fits meaningful uncertainty

REAL-WORLD EXAMPLE08

Choosing a model for a regulated app

A bank must meet fixed compliance controls while exploring a new customer onboarding experience.

  1. 1

Identify fixed regulatory evidence and approval gates.

  2. 2

Separate them from uncertain experience and adoption questions.

  3. 3

Use controlled phase gates for compliance and iterative prototypes for the customer journey.

  4. 4

Maintain traceability between evolving stories and approved controls.

OUTCOME

A hybrid model preserves governance while enabling early user feedback and incremental learning.

03 · INTERVIEW PRACTICE

Business Analyst interview questions to practice.

Open each answer, then practice saying it naturally in your own words.

SUGGESTED ANSWER

Predictive delivery establishes and baselines more detail earlier; adaptive delivery uses increments and feedback to refine decisions. Compare uncertainty, governance, verification, involvement, release cadence, and cost of change.

04 · KEY LANGUAGETerms to use accurately.
01

Increment

A usable, verified, additive result that meets the agreed quality standard; its release timing is a separate decision.

02

WIP limit

A cap on work in progress used to improve flow.

03

Feedback loop

A repeated cycle of delivery, observation, learning, and adjustment.

04

Lead time

Elapsed time from request to completion.
